About the ProgramThe MLA book publications program publishes the authoritative guides on MLA documentation style and provides a wide variety of titles that support teaching and research in modern languages and literatures. The MLA’s list includes books that are widely adopted for courses in writing, language instruction, and literary studies. It features collections of original essays on literary, professional, and pedagogical issues. The MLA also publishes research guides and bibliographies that assist scholars with research activities. The MLA does not publish scholarly monographs. The current new title output is approximately one dozen books each year.MLA book publications are developed through a process of rigorous peer review. The program is administered by the book publications staff in conjunction with the Publications Committee, which is charged by the Executive Council with overseeing the development and approval of new titles. The Publications Committee is composed of MLA members who represent diverse areas among the fields encompassed by the association. Many MLA books are published within series: Approaches to Teaching World Literature; New Variorum Edition of Shakespeare; Options for Teaching; Teaching Languages, Literatures, and Cultures; Texts and Translations; and World Literatures Reimagined. Two of the MLA's most widely used books are the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers and the MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing. The MLA book publications staff works with authors and editors to develop projects before forwarding them to the Publications Committee, which makes all publication decisions.
