Advertising in PMLA
Since 1884 PMLA, the journal of the Modern Language Association of America, has published articles of interest to scholars of language and literature. It appears in six annual issues:
- Four issues (January, March, May, October) present essays and other literary-critical writings.
- The September issue, a reference guide, contains a listing of the association's members, a directory of departmental administrators, and other professional information.
- The November issue is the program for the association's annual convention. The convention will take place in San Francisco in 2008 and in Philadelphia in 2009.
In 2008 issues are sent directly to over 30,800 college and university teachers of English and foreign languages who belong to the association and to over 2,300 libraries worldwide.
Electronic PMLA
Library subscribers receive current issues of PMLA electronically. The electronic version, in searchable PDF, allows users to view the advertising section of the journal. Since electronic subscribers receive the print version as well, advertisers enjoy unprecedented visibility.
Index Features
Two indexes increase interest in PMLA ads. The index of authors advertised, appearing in the print and electronic editions, includes all authors, editors, and translators whose works are featured in your advertisements. We ask that you prepare a list of names according to these guidelines:
- create the list as a text file or a Microsoft Word document
- format the names last name first, and list them in order of appearance in the ad
- include authors, editors, and translators mentioned in your ads
- do not include names that do not appear in the ads
- do not include book titles
- do not include persons who are subjects of works but are not the primary creators
- e-mail your list to aschneider@mla.org by the materials deadline
In addition, the other indexthe index of advertisersincludes the URLs of advertisers' Web sites, with live links in the electronic format. So be sure to send us the URL that should appear.
Electronic Archive on JSTOR
JSTOR provides the electronic archive for PMLA, and issues from 1886 to 2002 are available in a searchable, full-text format. Since advertisements are included with the issues, your ads can be viewed in perpetuity. JSTOR, a not-for-profit organization established by a grant in 1995 from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, creates electronic versions of the back issues of scholarly journals and distributes digital copies to libraries. At the end of each year, the next annual volume of PMLA is added to JSTOR. Thus, at the end of 2008 the 2003 volume will be added.

About PDF Files
Downloadable documents are in Portable Document Format (PDF). These files can be viewed, saved, and printed in identical form on most computers. Adobe Reader is free software for using PDF files. If it is not installed on your computer, you can download it from Adobe Systems. For those who use screen readers, recent versions of Adobe Reader include text-to-speech and other accessibility functions, and Adobe provides online tools that convert PDF files into HTML or ASCII text.
