PAMLA implemented a new two-day, two-meal conference format at its 2006 convention sponsored by the University of California, Riverside. All conference sessions took place on Friday and Saturday (rather than from Friday afternoon through Sunday noon). According to member feedback, PAMLA's two-day, two-meal format allowed for more balanced session attendance, increased affordability for graduate students, greater conference cohesion, more free time for attendees to take advantage of the convention city's offerings and to network with colleagues, improved attendance at the plenary address, and ease of return travel on Sunday.
Sessions at the 2006 conference, hosted by President Steven Axelrod (Univ. of California, Riverside), were held at the Riverside Convention Center. The forum, arranged by former First Vice President Kathleen Lundeen (Western Washington Univ.), was devoted to the topic "Transoceanic Dialogues." The forum speakers were Ray Fleming (Florida State Univ.), Sandra Kumamoto Stanley (California State Univ., Northridge), Ana Maria Rodriguez-Vivaldi (Western Washington State Univ.), and Joan Hoffman (Western Washington State Univ.). The plenary speaker on Saturday afternoon was Parama Roy (Univ. of California, Davis). The title of her address was "Transits, Transformations, and Body Talk: Gandhi's Passages from India."
Over seventy sessions are scheduled for the 2007 convention at Western Washington Univ., from Friday, November 2 at 8:30 a.m., to Saturday, November 3 at 6:00 p.m. The Friday luncheon will include the Presidential Address by Kathleen Lundeen (Western Washington Univ.) and the Saturday luncheon a plenary address. A reception sponsored by Western Washington Univ. will follow the forum on Friday evening.
The membership presently stands at 557. Dues are $25 for regular members, $15 for lecturers, $10 for students and emeriti, and $30 for joint memberships. Membership includes a subscription to Pacific Coast Philology (PCP); a subscription to the newsletter, which appears twice a year, in February and September, and includes conference information, news about the organization and its members, and a subscription to the PAMLA e-mail discussion list, which transmits relevant announcements about the organization. Presentation of a paper at the annual conference and publication of an essay in PCP require that membership be up-to-date. By reciprocal agreement, regular NEMLA and PAMLA members may participate in the meetings of both associations.
PCP policy allows members to submit articles year-round for publication in the journal. PCP publishes essays by PAMLA members. Articles should be 15-25 pages in length, follow MLA format, and be submitted in triplicate to the general editor (Victoria Myers, c/o Humanities Division, Pepperdine Univ., 24255 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu, CA 90263-4225). For publication in the annual fall issue, at-large articles should be submitted by 15 January of the year of publication. Articles should be in English. The author’s name should appear only on the cover sheet. Currently there are sixty institutions that subscribe to PCP, which is also available on the JSTOR and ABELL databases.
PCP also publishes reviews of books authored by PAMLA members. If members have had a book published within the last three years, they should send (or have their publisher send) a copy to the general editor at the above address. Reviewers are enlisted from among scholars of note in the book's area of expertise and may or may not be PAMLA members.
At the 2007 executive committee meeting, the audit committee approved the 2005-06 financial report. The closing balance remained stable at $16,368.80. In 2006 members donated $1,152 to the Graduate Student Scholarship. This represents an increase of $362 from the previous year. Six students received from $120 to $270 to help defray 2006 conference expenses. PAMLA would like to thank members heartily for their generosity and ask that they consider a tax-deductible donation this year, as requested on the membership form. Details on applying for the scholarship for the 2007 conference are available on the Web site. The deadline for applications is 1 August 2007.
PAMLA officers for 2007 are President, Kathleen Lundeen (Western Washington Univ.); First Vice President, Imke Meyer (Bryn Mawr Coll.); Second Vice President, Beverly Voloshin (San Francisco State Univ.), Pacific Coast Philology Editor, Victoria Myers (Pepperdine Univ.); and Executive Director, Salah Khan (Univ. of North Dakota).
